Specialist & Co-Curricular

Specialists

The school has a number of specialist areas, including:

Science (Kindergarten to Year Six)
Children participate in weekly Science lessons. Children cover the four strands of Biological Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Earth and Space Sciences, and Physical Sciences. The units focus on the ‘5E Model’ – Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate and Evaluate. Lessons are hands-on with a focus on inquiry skills such as questioning, exploring, use of data and representation.

Physical Education (Kindergarten to Year Six)
Children from Kindergarten to Year Six receive lessons from a specialist Physical Education teacher, which focus primarily on the development of fundamental movement and sports-related skills. Our students have the opportunity to represent our school in various sports, including swimming, athletics and cross-country.

The Arts (Kindergarten to Year Six)
The Arts are highly valued at Our Lady of Mount Carmel School. The arts provide an opportunity for children to express themselves through both visual arts and performance arts. Students participate in weekly lessons in our Arts Room. The Arts are also integrated into classroom learning, across the school through different learning areas and whole school activities.

Languages – Italian (Pre-Primary to Year Six)
Languages enables all students to communicate proficiently by providing students with essential communication skills in Italian, an intercultural capability, and an understanding of the role of language and culture in communication.

Make Jesus Real (Pre-Primary to Year Six)
Bring the Catholic faith to life by showing them how to live it. The lessons provide students the tools they need to experience the Spirit of Jesus and find the God Moments that are always happening around them.

Challenge (Selected Year Three to Year Six Students)
Through out standardised testing program, students are selected who would benefit from classroom withdrawal to engage in a program to extend their learning.

Co-Curricular

While we are a small school, we provide a range of co-curricular activities and opportunities for children.

Homework Club
Once a week, students in Year One to Year Six are able to participate in Homework Club. This afterschool session runs on a Monday from 3:00pm to 3:45pm and provides a space and opportunity for children to be supported as they complete their homework.

Dance Crew
Students have the opportunity to undertake before school dance sessions. These dance sessions help prepare students for interschool group competitions and provide an avenue for skill development.

Private Music Lessons
Students at Our Lady of Mount Carmel School are able to enrol in privately run music tutoring lessons during school time.

Rainbows
Each year, the school facilitates a number of Rainbows groups. These groups provide support to children as they navigate grief and heal from loss. These sessions take place during school time.

English as an Additional Language/Dialect Program
Through the support of Catholic Education Western Australia, students who meet entry criteria participate in the Virtual English an Additional Language/Dialect Program. This program provides additional support to those children for whom English is an additional language or dialect.
